The Farmer's Cursed Wife
I knew an old couple that lived near Hell
(whistling)
If they're not gone away, they're livin' there still
With me wig fol-lay fol-lig-a-dee fal-da-dal-lee
And the Devil he came to the man at the plough
Saying, "One of your family I'll take away now"
"Now which of me family do you like best?"
"It's your old scoldin' wife, it's her I like best"
And the Devil he hoisted her up on his back
"Oh, that you and herself may never come back!"
And he carried her onto a heap of stones
He left her down there and he jumped on her bones
And he carried her on 'til he came to Hook Hill
She cried as much there as would turn the mill
He carried her on 'til he came to Hell's wall
She lifted a hatchet and murdered them all
And some of the devils went up on the wall
Saying, "Take her home, Daddy, she'll batter us all!"
They were nine days gone and one coming back
She called for the scrape and she left in the pot
Learned from Seamus Ennis' The Bonny Bunch of Roses. Classic song about hating your wife. I've heard several different final verses - Frankie Armstrong sings it as:
This proves that the women are better than men
They can go down to Hell and come straight back again
